How to Prepare and What wear to your first class?
- Water bottle
- Trimmed nails and toenails
- You might want to wear a mouth guard
- No jewellery of any kind (rings, earrings, watches, bracelets, necklaces)
- Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and practice light warm-up exercises before starting ( no clothing with zippers or belt ) If you wish to follow Jiu Jitsu regularly, you will require a kimono (Gi) Make sure to NEVER use an unwashed gi and rashguard/undershirt for class. Not only will unwashed gis and rash guards smell, but that can hold bacteria which can cause infections to you and your training partner.
- An open mind, a positive attitude and willingness to learn
BJJ is a martial art that requires patience and practice to become proficient in, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t pick up the techniques right away.
Focus on having fun and staying safe in class.
How are classes structured?
A typical BJJ class may include warm-up exercises, drilling of basic techniques, and live sparring.
Warm-up
Warm-up exercises are designed to gradually increase heart rate and prepare the body for physical activity. They typically involve dynamic stretches, bodyweight exercises, and light cardio.
Drilling
Drilling is an important part of BJJ, as it helps to reinforce the techniques being taught. During drilling, students will practice techniques on a partner, going through the motion of the technique without actually applying it. This helps to build muscle memory and ensure that the technique will be applied correctly in a live situation.
Positional sparring
Positional sparring is a type of sparring in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) that focuses on the development of technique and strategy while maintaining a safe, controlled environment. It is designed to simulate actual live sparring, but with a predetermined order of positions and techniques. The idea is to challenge both partners to stay within the predetermined positions and techniques to gain a better understanding of how each position works. Positional sparring may also include drills and specific technique instruction, such as escaping a particular position or defending a specific submission.
Live Sparring
Live sparring is when students actually apply the techniques they have been learning. It is important to ensure that all safety precautions are followed and that both partners are aware of the risks involved. During live sparring, students can also begin to develop their own style of BJJ, as they learn which techniques work best for them.
